The Joys of Singing!

Singing is the most human form of music-making. It comes from within you, and goes wherever you go. On top of being an incredibly fun way to make music, singing also has a huge variety of impacts on everything you do in music. Let’s take a look at some of the benefits.

PITCH

Being able to perform music in tune is a must for anyone who isn’t playing a piano (that’s the technician’s job!). When you learn how to sing, you learn how to use your ear more effectively. Performing any music involves listening as much as playing. If you are listening to your own sense of pitch, you will be able to easily transfer that skill to any other instrument you ever study.

(Oh, and there’s really no such thing as being “tone deaf.” If you can recognize the different accents of people living in London versus New York, you aren’t tone deaf.)

RHYTHM

Music is all about rhythm. Whether it’s finding the right groove, or simply performing the note at the right time, a sense of rhythm is crucial for every musician. Singing allows us to perform our music with no lag or delay in making the note happen. We open our mouths and the note happens instantly. When you can feel the space a note takes up during a song, you can really begin to get a sense of different genres and styles

VERSATILITY

Singing is far and away the most versatile form of musicmaking the world over. It exists in every country, culture, and historical period. Whether you want to be strutting around the opera stage, performing in a Broadway musical, or just belting a tune in your own shower, singing means you can take your music anywhere, and work in any kind of music your heart desires.
