Guess the Birthday Contest #2!

One of our beloved piano teachers, Mariko Kamachi-Cosbey, is due to have a baby soon! So, following tradition, we're having another contest to guess the baby's actual birthday. Up for grabs is another $25 iTunes gift card!

The baby is due October 1.

All you have to do to win this contest is to go to our Facebook page (either by clicking the blue Facebook button at the top of the page, or by clicking here to visit our Toronto Music Alliance page), "Like" us, and go to the contest post on the Wall. Leave your best guess in the comments. One guess per person!

If multiple people correctly guess the birthday, the winner will be chosen at random from the correct entries. If nobody guesses the correct date, all entries will be entered into a random drawing. Contest closes... well, whenever the baby comes! Good luck to everybody out there.

(And if you aren't on/can't be on Facebook, let us know in person and we'll give you the super-secret email address you can use to enter too!)

Summer Adventures: Ida Neufeld at Mannes College

While many of you were on vacation, our teachers didn’t stop learning.  Earlier this summer, Ida Neufeld, along with colleague and friend of ToMA Karen Quentin, attended the Festival and Competition at Mannes College New School of Music in New York in the week of July 22-28.

“This was an incredible experience for me,” notes Ida. “The master classes were with some of the best professors and international musicians that are in the classical world today.

“In addition to that, every evening there were two concerts - at 6:00 and 8:30p.m - that one could attend.”

The performers were the College’s instructors and professors, as well as international celebrities such as Mark Andre Hamelin.

There was also a student competition. The performing students were from all over the world, including Indonesia, China, Brazil, Argentina, Russia, Singapore, Malaysia, Belarus and more. Many of the instructors were from the former Soviet Union, who achieved recognition there as well as abroad.

Ida’s impressions? “I feel very inspired by what I have learned after attending this excellent institute and can’t wait to share these ideas with my students.”

We can’t wait either.

Welcome Dr. Karen Broadhurst!

Our community continues to expand! We're thrilled to welcome Dr. Karen Broadhurst to the ToMA Faculty. Dr. Broadhurst brings a wealth of professionalism, experience and passion to our school. You can read her bio here, or read on for more.

Karen has been a dear friend to Toronto Music Alliance since its inception. Music runs in her family: her mother, Arden Broadhurst was (and is) a very prominent teacher with the Ontario Registered Music Teachers Association, and her children are also avid musicians (two of them are preparing for ARCT-level courses, with the youngest not far behind!).

in addition, Dr. Broadhurst will be supply-teaching for Mariko Kamachi-Cosbey while she is off on maternity leave, so Mariko's students will benefit from her different perspective.

We are truly glad to have Karen join our amazing community of teachers at ToMA, and hope you'll come by to meet this amazing teacher. Welcome, Karen!

Back to School: How Does Payment Work?

Another one of the big questions we get from new students is, "How do I pay for my lessons?" It's simple, fair and easy to understand.

Methods of Payment

Due to the COVID-19 situation, all lessons at Toronto Music Alliance are being conducted through our Online Academy. Because we cannot process any in-person payments, we are pleased to offer credit card payments using Visa, MasterCard and even Discover Card. In addition, we can accept Interac etransfers for bulk payments.

Do I Have to Pay All At Once?

Not at all! Most of our students choose to break up their invoices into simple monthly payments. These can be processed easily and automatically via credit card.

If you do choose to pay all at once via Interac etransfer, we offer a 2% discount off your account invoice, so feel free to consider this option!

Can I Pay for Lessons One-at-a-Time?

No, but we have good reasons. To be honest, we have so many students that we couldn't keep track of that many payments flying in week after week. Second, it works hand-in-hand with our attendance policy to ensure that student lessons proceed smoothly and simply. Finally, it simplifies your life to not have to worry about remembering a payment every time you come in.

Am I Locked In for the Whole Year?

Again, not at all! Unlike many other schools that pre-book you for a large block of time, we only ask that you give us four weeks' written notice if you have to stop (this is also in our attendance policy). We will then pro-rate your invoice down to the time you would be stopping and close out the account.

This All Seems Way Too Simple.

Well, we try to keep the administration to a minimum here at ToMA. You're not here to talk about the admin (though we're always happy to chat or answer any questions or concerns you have!) but to enjoy being part of a thriving musical community. If there is any information here that is missing, let us know and we will be sure to update this post with your questions.
