Announcing ToMA Arts Select Groups Program!
We are thrilled to announce our brand new enhanced group performance program: ToMA Arts Select! Our new groups programming will be starting in October. This initiative has been in the works for many months, and we are proud to share this new opportunity with you. Read on to learn more!
ToMA Arts Select is for students who wish to push their performance ability to the next level. Through supplemental group classes, we are able to offer our students higher levels of musicianship, literacy, and confidence.
The goal of ToMA Select is to help students achieve even greater success, and to play in settings other than our two main recital opportunities. Students will be encouraged to perform in outside opportunities, such as community orchestras, performance festivals such as Kiwanis or Port Milford, or Royal Conservatory examinations.
To begin, we are offering three courses:
MUSIC THEORY
You know how you can read a book just by picking it up and looking at it? What if you could do that with your music?
That is one of the main goals behind ToMA's new Group Theory Classes with Gregory Millar. In this class, you will learn how to understand the language of music, how and why pieces are created the way they are, and cut the time it takes to learn a piece by a third or more. Dr. Gregory Millar will guide students through all aspects of Music Theory, and even prepare you for an RCM Theory Exam. (Parents: Theory exams are co-requisites for instrumental exams. And did you know students can earn high school credits completing these exams?)
This course will be offered on Tuesdays at 4:00.
EAR TRAINING & MUSICIANSHIP
Do you hear a tune and wish you could figure out what notes they were playing? Do you and the metronome have massive disagreements about what the beat is? Or have you listened to a recording and wished you could make your playing sound like the artist?
Through Ear Training & Musicianship, students will gain valuable skills including rhythm training, transcription, sight reading, and lots more. The course is taught by Dr. Gregory Millar, who has been helping students be not just better performers, but better musicians for many years. His wealth of experience will make sure your music is truly your own, and learn to listen to all music with a brand new expert ear.
This course will be offered on Thursdays at 7:30.
MASTERCLASS (Biweekly)
One of the most important parts of performance is... well, performing! At a Masterclass, students will be able to share what they have been working on with our faculty and their fellow musicians. Here, they will receive valuable feedback beyond just their private lesson environment. Adding positive, constructive new insights will help unleash their best music! It also allows students to have regular performance opportunities, learning how to feel confident performing in front of others on a regular basis. Finally, it helps keep students moving forward, since they will need to show something new each session!
Our Masterclass program will be spearheaded by Yosef Tamir, along with other members of our faculty.
This program will run on Sundays, time TBA based on our students.
The cost for each group class is $20 per student, and run 60 minutes each. For Theory and Musicianship classes, there will be supplemental materials such as workbooks, which can be purchased.
We have other programs in the works, including a collaborative piano program, songwriting program, and more! Please stay tuned for more announcements as our programs are ready to go!
